A fire has broken out at a popular tourist attraction in the Spanish city of Valencia, forcing a mass evacuation.

Images and footage from the scene in the east of the city, near aquarium L'Oceanogràfic, show thick black smoke billowing from a building into the sky. 

The origin of the blaze is not known however it's understood it occurred at around 11:00 local time.

The Valencia Extra reports that the fire is controlled and that the workforce and the public have been evacuated. There are no reports of any injuries and no animals were harmed. 

L'Oceanogràfic is the largest aquarium in Europe and is home to more than 45,000 animals.
