An airline has axed six routes from two Scottish airports to destinations across Europe.

Ryanair has cut five routes from Edinburgh Airport and one from Glasgow Prestwick Airport for next year.

The airline has withdrawn the routes from Edinburgh to Carcassone, Nîmes and Poitiers in France and Santiago de Compostela in Spain and Turin in Italy, and Glasgow Prestwick to Marseille in France.

A spokesman for Ryanair told The Herald the move comes after a review of seasonal routes.

"Ryanair, Europe’s no 1 airline operates more than 3,000 daily flights from 92 bases, connecting 230 airports in 36 countries," the spokesman said. "To ensure that Ryanair continues to offer passengers low fares on an exciting and diverse range of routes we undertake seasonal route reviews to make way for the development of potentially stronger and more popular routes across our network.

"These six routes will not be carried forward to the Summer 2024 season. However, Ryanair’s Scottish customers can still enjoy low fares to the widest choice of exciting destinations when booking their summer 2024 getaways."

A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: "It’s of course disappointing to see some destinations depart but with more than 140 others to choose from at Edinburgh Airport, passengers have a range of destinations to get away on that special trip."

The information first appeared in UK aviation analyst Sean Moulton's feed, before being checked and verified ahead of publication.
