The grand finals of the British Street Food Awards took place in London this weekend with a Scottish team crowned as champions after just three months of trading.

Chosen by a judging panel including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Richard Jones, and Michelin-starred chefs Tom Brown and Andy Beyon, Fife-based Choola fought off stiff competition from street food vendors across the UK to take home the top prize.

Founded by husband and wife duo Ameer and Nicole, Choola brings a taste of Nepal to the streets of Scotland with a menu of fusion dishes which put a modern twist on traditional fare like handmade momo dumplings and Aloo Dum.

After moving to the UK from Nepal at the age of ten, Ameer soon discovered a passion for cooking alongside his mother and aunts which would lead to a career as a chef.

With a background in marketing, Nicole 'swapped the corporate world for kitchen life' earlier this year, as the couple decided to go all in with their new street food venture.

Last month, Choola was named a joint winner of the Scottish Street Food Awards alongside Fred's Backyard Barbecue, earning them a spot at last weekend's finals in Hackney.

Having secured the top prize they will now go on to represent Scotland at the European Streetfood Awards from Friday, September 19 to Sunday, October 1 in Germany.

In a statement posted on social media this morning, the team said: "What a weekend.

"Never did we think we would achieve this within our first year of trading, if ever.

"We came to London grateful for the opportunity but not expecting any result.

"Choola has been trading properly for 3 months and to have achieved this now is beyond words.

"The biggest thank you to our families.

"Without them, this wouldn't be possible."

Joint Scottish Street Food Award Winners Fred's Backyard Barbecue were also recognised at the UK finals with the 'Snack of the Year' Award for their Pork Belly Burnt Ends.

Meanwhile, Midlothian-based Bia secured the 'Best Main Dish' prize with their Irish Boxty with slow-cooked lamb shoulder and pickled fennel.

Further flying the flag for Scotland, Edinburgh Street Food took second place in the competitive 'Best Food Hall' category.
