Much has been made of how Glasgow has changed in recent years, with the city regularly being hailed as having some of the “coolest” neighbourhoods in the world. 

This week, Kevin McKenna ran the rule over the West End, beginning with Glasgow University’s sprawling campus development, which he called a "depressing experience" to walk past.

Today, a reader gives his view on what has been done – and it is a damning one. 


Tim Huntingford of Glasgow writes: 

"I do not often find myself in agreement with Kevin McKenna, but I am completely at one with him in his comments about the new campus at Glasgow University ("Is West End town a dead-end world? Or is there hope?", The Herald, October 23). 

"What a great opportunity has been missed to create a coherent set of buildings with architectural merit to set alongside the glory of the original Gilbert Scott Buildings (though I would happily see the building tacked on the end of the main buildings demolished to enhance the spectacle).

"Instead, though the open spaces are welcome and attractive, they are surrounded by a variety of dull-looking boxes, lacking originality and character. 

"I have now lived in Glasgow for almost 50 years, and one of the great delights of being a Glaswegian has been the architecture of the city.

"Many friends visiting have been given a tour of the jewels in the crown of the city, but I fear that in the future, the new campus will not be included in the tour, unless it be to show the chance that has been passed up to add to the city scape that makes Glasgow so special."
