BARRY Manilow’s appearances at the Glasgow Apollo in September 1983 excited considerable attention. “A capacity 3000 crowd forked out £15 a head to shower their hero with adulation,” remarked the Evening Times on the morning after the opening show.

Two female fans - sadly, their names are not recorded - gave voice to their feelings on a mirror (pictured). Another fan, a 34-year-old voluntary worker at Castlemilk’s Jeely Piece Club, was so popular with her friends there that they got together to buy her a ticket. “I’ve got all his records,” she said, “and tonight will be something very special.”

“I’ve watched shows at the Apollo for a few years,” wrote the Evening Times’ pop writer. “Usually my accompanying audiences are much younger. Seldom have they matched last night’s crowd for enthusiasm. They were ecstatic at his every move, word and note.”

On The BarryNet, the official website of the Barry Manilow International Fan Club, one fan, Irene, writes that after the Apollo show, she and her cousin saw a cluster of fans waiting at the stage door for Barry to get into his waiting car. “We heard a loud scream and then the fans went mad ... I turned to get one last glimpse and saw the huge Rolls Royce turn down towards us. I screamed to my cousin- she turned, bumping me and knocked me over the front of the car. I looked up and saw Barry looking back at me. Best ‘and scariest’ moment of my life!”
