Glasgow has many, many monikers.
It’s often called the Dear Green Place.
Others know it as the Dear Black and Blue Place. (A name used by those who foolishly attempt to immerse themselves in Glasgow’s vigorous nightlife without the protection of a burly bodyguard.)
As far as the Diary is concerned, Glasgow will always be the City of Broken Escalators.
Wander into any department store or large shopping centre and you’re sure to be confronted by at least one knackered mechanical staircase.
The Buchanan Galleries has suffered a few that have been out of operation recently. Thankfully, one has been restored to its former glory.
Reader Sally Fenn was ascending this very staircase with a pal, who said approvingly: “Look how shiny and sparkly it is!
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we reached the top and were confronted by the Pearly Gates.”
(Alas, it wasn’t the Pearly Gates, just Boots the Chemist. Not quite as heavenly, though they do have a decent assortment of cosmetics and toiletries.)
The lengths some people go to…
Frank Kinghorn from Rutherglen was notified of a medical appointment at Gartnaval Hospital and informed that if he can’t attend he should advise the NHS by emailing them at the following address: wgach.orthopaedicoutpatientcancellations@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.
“Does any reader know of a longer email address?” wonders Frank, who adds: “As notification came by a postal letter, it’s not possible to copy and paste it.
“So perhaps I’m to be treated for repetitive strain injury to my fingers after having to type it. Or maybe eye strain because of checking for typing errors.”
Talking balls
Scotland’s participation in the World Cup is over, as we might have mentioned once or twice before.
A pal of Charles Irving said to him the other day: “I can’t wait till the next World Cup, to see Scotland beaten all over again.”
Hard to swallow
Food loving reader Gordon Harwood gets in touch to say: “In the old days there were no online reviews, so we had to discover bad restaurants one plate at a time.”
In the club
We mentioned that the legendary Glasgow venue The Garage is up for sale.
Reader Roger Slater says: “Thirty years ago, that was where I met my wife. Though I’m sure The Garage has some good points, too.”
"Fits my CV perfectly," says reader Barry Stevenson. (Image: Barry Stevenson.)
Playing the game
Sporting fella Callum Banks tells us: “Badminton used to be my least favourite sport… until I played worseminton. Maybe I should have just stuck to minton, instead.”
